An earthquake with magnitude 5.1 occurred on Tuesday in Christchurch, the second most important city in New Zealand hit by several earthquakes in recent months, causing interruption of electricity already affected districts, according to the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS).

.

Epicenter, recorded at 22.34 local (13.34, GMT), was located seven miles southwest of Christchurch, at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

Police reported no damage, but local media said power interruption in several areas.

Christchurch recover from the earthquake on February 22 that killed 181 people and destroyed much of downtown.

The city was damaged on three occasions, significant earthquakes in the last nine months, but especially by an earthquake measuring 6 on 13 June, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in February.

Earthquakes in recent months occurred on a fault, which scientists have detected a date. GNS Science Institute believes that it has been inactive for about 16,000 years until September 2010.

New Zealand, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, to limit the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, records up to 15,000 earthquakes a year.
